I was contacted by Baker Days to review their Letterbox Cake. The idea is, you go onto their website, choose a cake, personalise it and then you choose when it is dispatched. Delivery is free unless you want it next day, then you have to pay £2.99. A standard letterbox cake is £14.99. You can choose from a number of different cakes: Madeira which incurs no extra cost, Carrot Cake, which is £1.20, Fruit Cake, which is £1.80, Gluten and Wheat free, which is £1.80 and Double Chocolate Chip Cake, which is £2.00 extra.
You can also choose a medium party cake which serves 8-16 and costs £26.99.
You can choose from many different categories: birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas, thank you’s and so on. The possibilities seem endless! You can choose from a selection of cakes which have loads of different designs on or you can make it extra personal and upload your own photos.
The cake arrives in a very neat box and is definitely small enough to fit through the letterbox. We have a postbox and it fitted in there!
I was worried, as we don’t have a very good postwoman, that the cake would arrive damaged. However, it was very well packed and when opened was perfect.
Here is what you get in the box.
You get a card which you can personalise and some balloons, I think this is a cute touch.
The cake is about 12cm across. Here is a picture next to a ruler so you get an idea of the size.
Since it’s Halloween soon and my birthday is in April, I decided to choose a Halloween cake to review. I chose the double chocolate chip cake.
You get a lovely tin that you can keep after you’ve finished the cake too 🙂
The cake smelt lovely and I was eager to have a taste. The cake is packaged in a plastic wrap with a handle to pull out the cake without damage.
Once I got the cake out, I was impressed with the aesthetics of the cake. The fondant was smooth and the design even on the cake.
The cake tasted lovely, no nasty after taste and definitely no cheap ingredients used. I sometimes find with normal shop bought cakes, that they can leave a funny taste in your mouth, but you do get what you pay for, a really tasty cake. It was very slightly dry, but not anything to complain about.
Overall Opinion: Whilst I think it’s a fabulous idea and great for adding that personal touch, it is quite expensive. It’s brilliant for people who either don’t bake, or for friends and family who live far away and you wouldn’t be able to give them a cake you’d made. However, I’m sure if you bought one of these cakes for your friends or family they would be very touched at the thought and excited at having their own personal cake!
